Sarah Rides to Kenya Next Tuesday, CTN will be saying farewell to our policy advisor Sarah Wilson. She will be riding approximately 10,000km through Central Europe, the Balkans, Turkey and the Middle East before heading south down the Nile and eventually to Kenya. New Telecommunications Voice For Australian Consumers ACCAN, the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network, took its first steps today with the announcement of its new Constitution and Inaugural Board. ACCAN is a single peak body representing the diversity of views among telecommunications consumers. ACCC/ ASIC Debt Collection Phone-in Day - 31 July The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) will hold a phone-in day dedicated to debt collection issues on Thursday 31 July 2008 from 8:30am to 5:30pm. The purpose of the day is to gather information about unlawful conduct by debt collectors or creditors and is not designed to provide advice to resolve financial difficulties. Call the debt collection day hotline (1300 302 502) to lodge a complaint if you have experienced problems with debt collectors or creditors. They particularly want to hear from you if you have: - received phone calls or visits to your home or workplace at unreasonable hours of the day or night about debts you owe - felt threatened by a debt collector - been hassled about debts you don't owe or have paid For more information go to: ACCC Information Page
ACCC issues warnings for smartphone mobile data usageThe emergence of new smartphone technology, such as the recent release of the Apple iPhone 3G, has led the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to issue a note of warning to consumers. "As often happens with new technology, consumer protection issues follow," ACCC Chairman, Mr Graeme Samuel, said today. "The ACCC is particularly concerned that consumers may be misled if they are not made sufficiently aware that their data allocations can be exceeded - at significant cost. Go to: ACCC Press Release
Vale Christopher Newell CTN staff and Board are greatly saddened by the passing of our member and friend Canon Associate Professor Christopher Newell.
